Paris 2024 Olympic Cycling Suits

The aerodyanmic drag of cyclist largely depends on the flow separation along the rider's arms and legs. The is lillustrated using oil flow visualisation. The separation point can be postponed, reducing the aerodynamic drag, through well designed suits. Low-drag suits consist of different panels, some smooth and some textured or rough, depending on the locattion on the body. The arm sleeves of the suits designed for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, consist of a double-layer construction to minimize aerodynamic drag of these bluff limbs. Wind tunnel tests show that this sleeve design saves up to 10% in air resistance on the entire bike-rider system. In this project I was responsible for the suit aerodynamic design and testing. The work was in collaborating with AGU, Sportconfex, TeamNL, the KNWU and the TU Delft.
